You book through a licensed outfitter
If you live outside the province, you generally cannot plan a moose, black bear or caribou hunt on your own. You book with a licensed outfitter, who provides the guide, the camp or lodge, and the hunting area. Choose the outfitter first; everything else follows from that booking.
Licences are issued through the outfitter
Non-resident big game licences are issued through the outfitter rather than applied for directly by the hunter. Ask your outfitter which licence your package includes, what it allows you to take, and whether any separate fees apply. Where caribou is offered, availability can be limited, so ask early.
Bringing a firearm into Canada
Non-residents bringing a rifle or shotgun into Canada declare it at the border to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) using the non-resident firearm declaration form. Get the current form and instructions from CBSA or the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program before you leave, and follow its signing instructions. If you fly, also check your airline's rules for firearms and ammunition. Some hunters use a rifle supplied by the outfitter instead; ask whether that is an option.
Bring proof of hunter safety
Carry proof of your hunter education or hunter safety certification. Your outfitter can tell you exactly what documentation they need to issue your licence.
Seasons and quotas
Big game seasons generally run in the fall, with some variation by species and area. Dates, licence quotas and management areas are set each year, so check the current provincial hunting and trapping guide for the season you are planning.
Fishing is separate
Angling has its own licences and rules. Non-residents fishing some waters, including many salmon rivers, may need a licensed guide. Check the current angler's guide or ask a fishing outfitter.
